Statehood bug goes down South, Madurai proposed to be new capital of new State
MADURAI, AUG 28: A demand for carving out a new state in the South of the Cauvery river in Tamil Nadu with Madurai as its headquarters for administrative convenience and industrial development, was made by the state president of the Madurai-based South Indian Consumer Protection Council, K Mannavalan today. Mannavalan, a lawyer by profession, told newsmen here that the Union Government should reconsider the recommendations of the Justice A N Dhar Commission on Reorganisation of states constituted in 1948 for the purposes of administrative convenience. The Nehru cabinet had rejected the recommendations and instead gave approval for the creation of linguistic states, he said. Pointing out that Chennai, the present state headquarters was located too far away for people residing in Kanniyakumari district, Mannavalan said Madurai would be an ideal place for locating the new headquarters. The areas south of the Cauvery with about 18 districts stretching up to Kanniyakumari could form part of the new district, he suggested. Copyright © 2000 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
