Elderly couple murdered in Gokulpuri

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 1: The decomposed bodies of an elderly couple were found in their Roshan Vihar house in the Gokulpuri area of north-east Delhi last night. The bodies of Amar Singh (70) and Prem Lata (65) were found in separate beds with similar injuries on their necks and a piece of cloth stuffed in their mouths. The couple used to live alone in the Roshan Vihar house and they were last seen outside their residence on Saturday evening.

The bodies were recovered by the police after neighbours started complaining of a foul smell emanating from the house. Though the front door to the house was locked from inside, the back door was found open. The police have not been able to ascertain whether the couple was robbed before being murdered.

Amar Singh was a money lender and owned a kabari shop in the area. Scrap dealers would apparently come to the house for business as well. Preliminary investigations have revealed that certain financial transactions might have led to the double murder.

Singh was getting the area in front of his house repaired and the police also suspect that the labourers might be involved in the murder. The couple owned two more houses in the area. According to the neighbours, ``The couple kept to themselves. They used to quarrel a lot which is unusual considering the fact that they were so old.''

They added that the couple's son died a few years ago due to an illness. Their daughter-in-law lives in Rohini along with her child and their daughter is married and lives elsewhere.
