Police investigating cross-FIRs

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SHIMLA, Sept 1: The Shimla police have started investigations into the two cross-FIRs lodged by K.D. Sharma, a local lawyer and Rajesh Kashyap, a junior doctor at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) hospital levelling charges of assault on each other. Sharma had gone to the hospital to attend to a patient where he clashed with the junior doctor on Saturday.

The patient, Soma Devi, who was admitted in the medicine ward of the hospital, had died later and Sharma alleges negligence of the doctors on duty. Sharma in his FIR and a representation to principal of the college N.K. Sarin had alleged that Kashyap had declined to administer an injection to the patient which they had arranged from Delhi to save the life of Soma Devi. She was suffering from malaria and had been referred from Bilaspur.

Kashyap, who had submitted his complaint to the police later the same day, alleged that Sharma had attacked him in the hospital ward during his duty hours on August 29. The junior doctors had also observed a two-hour strike to lodge their protest.

Sharma told the ENS that the doctor had not only refused to administer the injection prescribed by his senior a day earlier and arranged after a great effort from Delhi (as it was not available in Shimla and Chandigarh) but had also misbehaved with him, when he threatened to complaint to Health Minister J.P. Nadda. ``I had immediately informed the principal over the phone, though the doctor had managed to disconnect the phone also,'' he alleged.

When contacted Head of the Medicine Department S.K. Bansal, however, defended the junior doctor saying since the injection was being administered for the first time the doctor thought it proper to consult his seniors. Instead of co-operating with the doctor, the attendant (Sharma) had tried to assault and manhandle him, he said and regretted the behaviour of the lawyer. Bansal claimed that he had managed to dissuade the junior doctors from going on strike.

Police said that investigations into both the FIRs had been taken up simultaneously and Rajesh Kashyap had been called for his statement.
