SC, ST body stages dharna
Members of the local unit of All India SCs, STs and Buddhists LIC Employees' Welfare Association organised a dharna during the lunch hours in front of the LIC building in Sector 17, in support of their demands, here today. The employees were demanding the withdrawal of orders regarding the curtailment of facilities available to the SC and ST employees. Opposing the Central government move to privatise the corporation, the employees said they would continue their struggle.Function
Tree-plantation function held
A variety of saplings were planted at a tree plantation function organised by the State Bank of Patiala branch at Government High School, Khuda Alisher today. Presiding over the function, secretary of Servants of People Society, Onkar Chand, highlighted the importance of trees. Among others who planted trees were branch manager Ranbir Singh, village sarpanch Gurdial Singh, school staff and students. Later, students presented a colourful cultural programme.
School magazine released
DPI (Schools), D. S. Mangat released a school magazine, ``Shashank'', at a function organised at the Government Model High School, Sector 36 today. He also planted a tree on the school premises. School headmistress Usha Khullar read the annual report. Prizes were also given to meritorious students.

Sarup Singh's death mourned
A meeting of the management, officers and staff of Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) was held here today to mourn the death of Housing and Urban Development Minister and PUDA chairman Sarup Singh.

SOPU demand
A delegation of students headed by the president of Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) submitted a memorandum to the university authorities regarding automatic promotion from the lower class of the B.Sc. and M.Sc. honours school to the successive class. According to a statement issued by the press secretary of SOPU, Ajay Pal Singh Gill, the students are demanding that they be promoted as was the practice during the previous years.

Internet complaint
Internet subscribers have complained that the connectivity in the city has been badly affected since the past one week. In a memorandum, subscribers stated that two of the telephone numbers were not responding properly. While dialling the other two telephones, subscribers were facing the problem of getting ``junk characters'' and were getting disconnected immediately, they alleged.
Speaking on the occasion, I. S. Bindra, principal secretary to Housing and Urban Development and PUDA vice-chairman, said that the minister had guided the organisation with wisdom to give PUDA a new direction.
Others present included PUDA's Chief Administrator S. C. Agrawal and Additional Chief Administrators Seema Jain, Sonali Arora and R. K. Arora.
