Landslide flattens UP village, 178 feared dead
At least 178 people, including the entire 12th batch of 60 pilgrims on its way to Kailash-Mansarovar and eight personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), are feared killed in a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains that started at about 12.30 a.m, yesterday, sweeping off the entire Malpa village in Pithoragarh district bordering China and Nepal. Noted danseuse Protima G Bedi, who was among the pilgrims, is also feared killed in the landslide.

BJP ministers boycott Cabinet meeting
The public spat between key BJP leaders and Shiv Sena Housing minister Sureshdada Jain rocked the Maharashtra Cabinet yesterday with the BJP boycotting the meeting and swearing not to return untill Jain's new housing scheme was redrafted. This is perhaps the first time that a major coalition partner has taken such a drastic step prompting the Congress to immediately demand dimissal of the government on the grounds that the Sena had lost the confidence of its partner.

Bull's eye: Pak firing directed by observation posts in India
The secret behind the accuracy of recent Pakistani firing in Uri and Kargil is out. The Army has arrested an ex-service man, a Pakistani soldier and a couple of villagers at Adoosa village who were acting as observation posts (OP) for the Pakistanis in Uri. The Army worked on some clues to reach the conclusion that the Kargil firing was directed by someone from the telephone exchange.
