Rain throws life out of gear

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
S.A.S. NAGAR, July 10: Normal life in the township was thrown out of gear today as the season's heaviest rainfall flooded low-lying areas and forced students and office-goers to remain indoors.

Water entered Phase-I HM houses, and houses in Phase X and Phase III-B2, where fire tenders were pressed into service to drain out rain water. Fire officer B. S. Sandhu said it took them nearly five hours to drain out the water which had collected in houses in Phase I. The draining-out operation in Phase V was expected to be completed by late night.

Water entered houses in Phase V and Phase III-B2 (houses numbers from 1130 to 34 and from 1142 to 46), damaging household articles. An irked Phase V resident, M. S. Brar, said a similar problem had arisen last year following which the then Sub-Divisional Magistrate visited the area and assured the residents of preventive measures. "But, nothing was done."

A CTU bus (CH-01G-5050) was caught in the gushing rain water on the road between Sector 44 and Yadvindra Public School for at least two hours. Many kutcha houses in villages and labour colonies located in the low-lying areas of the township were damaged.

Contrary to the MC official's claim that the situation had improved considerably this year because of the pre-monsoon exercise carried out last month, the residents said they had never so much of water on roads.

In fact, the capacity of sewerage and storm drain water is so low that it could not withstand the accumulated water due to the sudden heavy downpour. The residents demanded strengthening and widening of the sewerage and storm drain water system to avoid a repeat of what happened today. They also demanded more road gullies on the lines of Chandigarh to drain out water.
