Vajpayee regrets bid to denotify churches, plan may be shelved
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee yesterday described as "wrong" the move to remove churches in the Capital from the list of religious places and assured Parliament that the Centre would seek a report on the matter from the Delhi Government. Outside Parliament too, the Bharatiya Janata Party sought to cool down the controversy created by Delhi Government's proposal and said that the plan would be shelved.
Pawar plays down Maharashtra crisis
Congress leader Sharad Pawar yesterday sought to play down the crisis in the Maharashtra Congress saying that there was no need to go into the details of state chief Ranjit Deshmukh's resignation owning moral responsibility for the defeat of party nominee R D Pradhan at the recent Rajya Sabha (RS) polls. Pawar refused to endorse the view that Deshmukh was being punished by the party high command for the RS poll fiasco.

With the near-failure of the government scheme to rehabilitate surrendered Naxalites, the extremists, especially those in the PWG-dominated north Telangana, are now having a tough time grappling with the uncertainties of their "promised normal life". While police officers try to gather as much information as possible from them, former colleagues are ever on the prowl, warning them of dire consequences if they cooperate with law-enforcing agencies.
