Government recalls another Gujral man home
The government has ordered the recall of another of former prime minister I K Gujral's political appointees, L C Jain, currently ambassador in South Africa. The order to withdraw Jain is believed to have been given around the same time the resignation of Salman Haidar, high commissioner to London, was accepted late last week.

AIADMK, PMK allies skip meet & Parliament
Things are going from bad to worse for the Vajpayee Government, with the AIADMK and the Pattali Makkal Kachi (PMK) staying away from Parliament and a Parliamentary party meeting of the BJP and its allies yesterday. However, the BJP took comfort from the contact established with AIADMK chief Jayalalitha by allies George Fernandes (Samata Party) and S S Barnala (Akali Dal).

Gawli gunman shot dead in encounter
An alleged sharp-shooter belonging to the Arun Gawli gang -- Khalil Ahmed Abdul Parkar -- was gunned down in an encounter at Gilder's Lane, near a municipal school in Nagpada, Mumbai last evening. According to the police, the incident occurred at around 8.45 pm when a team led by police inspector Sunil Temkar from Nagpada police station engaged in combing operations "chanced" upon two suspicious looking characters loitering outside Crystal Hotel on Gilder's Lane.

Govts need time to deliver -- Farooq
There is no threat to any religion or to the nation under the present BJP-led government at the Centre, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has said. Abdullah decried "frequent attempts at destabilising and toppling governments at the Centre" before they could do any good for the people saying this tendency would "weaken our country".
