Centre cheers as World Bank approves $543m credit; more loans on the way
The Union finance ministry on Friday heaved a sigh of relief, with the World Bank board clearing multi-sectoral $543.30 million Andhra Pradesh Economic Restructuring Loan (APREL) and hoped that at least three more loan proposals, amounting to about $500 million, would be approved shortly. This was the first multilateral loan cleared by the World Bank after India conducted five nuclear explosions at Pohkaran in May.

In yet another display of her whimsical ways, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief J Jayalalitha has cancelled her scheduled trip to Delhi to attend the Coordination Committee meeting, plunging the BJP-led Government into its most serious crisis yet. Ironically, the Government completed its first 100 days in office on Friday.

Pawar hits back at party rivals; stands by Patel
The power play in the Congress took an interesting turn on Friday with Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Sharad Pawar issuing a statement from London backing Praful Patel and hinting that some sections of the party were manipulating opinion against him. He also said he would talk to party president Sonia Gandhi on his return early next month.
